Riding Level 1 answers

You can take this test on day 1 the first day you play on Howrse. Once you have passed this level you can get a job as a groom. Only accept an employment contract for a week then get another groom job for 3 days because you can become a riding instructor in 10 days and you do not want to be tied to your groom job for 3 weeks. Horses are great to be around - they can provide their owners with excercise and companionship. How many of us have had a bad day then go down to the yard and forget everything else. You can teach your horses simple tricks but it cannot talk back to you in human speech. Horses love company - they live in herds in the wild where grass is their main food. When horses are afraid their first instinct is to flee. They may fight and bite each other but faced with danger they will automatically run away to safety. When they live on farms they are happy to live with goats, cows and sheep.

Female horses are called fillies when they are young and then a mare when they are adult. Male horses are colts when young and then if they are unable to reproduce they are called a gelding or if they have not been castrated they are called a stallion. There are breeds of miniature horses but if a horse is under 14.2hh they are called ponies. At some shows there are different classes for horses and ponies. A horse can usually live 25-30 years. My friend has a horse who is 40 now but this is very unusual. You horse can have shoes put on - it does not hurt when nails are tapped into the horns.

Walk, trot canter and gallop are the main gaits of a horse. Different breeds have special gaits but I do not know of any horses that can skip. A horse only has 2 nostrils like us. The horse is one of 10 living species of Equidae (sometimes known as the Horse Family). Horses have been domesticated between 4000 and 2000BC for work and transportation. Today, in most nations the horse is used for recreation and sporting more than work.

The horse's basic anatomy doesn't differ greatly than most 4-legged livestock animals. Horses have 2 ears, eyes, and nostrils, four legs with hooves and a tail. Unlike cattle and goats, horses have a single stomach with no chambers, and it is relatively small for the size of animal (at about 4 gallons). A full sized horse is 14.3hh or taller; ponies measure 14.2hh and smaller. The average horse moves in four gaits; a walk, trot, canter, and gallop.

Horses are herd animals and require companionship. If another horse is not available, horses have been known to bond with other livestock. Because of their lengthy life expectancies (over 25 years), horses can make excellent life-long companions for humans. Many horses are intelligent can be trained to do simple tricks and play with their owners. However, when frightened, a horse's first response is to run away.
